On April 18, 2022, Campus Life hosted the Love Purple Live Gold Awards. These nominations recognize student leaders, advisors, and registered student organizations for their positive contributions to the quality of student life at LSU. Thank you all for joining us to their achievements, merits, and passions. 

The 16 categories highlight individuals and organizations who provide leadership for the university every day.

The Agent of Change award is presented to a student who best demonstrates strong leadership skills while generating campus wide awareness on existing social issues. The student chosen for this award advocates for change through programs or service opportunities that educate and engage the LSU community.

This year’s recipient serves as a role model to students in each organization in which she is a member. Her tremendous hard work and dedication inspire all those around her. She has made it her mission to enhance the quality of student life at LSU. Her strong work ethic, empathetic heart, and commitment to improvement have made her an Agent of Change for the LSU community.

The Emerging Leader Award is presented to a first-year student who demonstrates an interest in enhancing personal leadership skills. This student participates in leadership programs and takes on active roles in student organizations. The student selected for this award has exhibited a commitment to LSU and the surrounding community while demonstrating an ability to follow through with commitments.

Zachary LeBlanc is a role model who encourages students to become involved and make an impact on campus who has already made a significant impact on both his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and the Freshman Leadership Council.

The Legacy Award is presented to a senior who is engaged within the campus community and has made a long-term commitment to enhance the quality of students’ lives at LSU for future generations. The student selected for this award has demonstrated a history of holding progressively responsible leadership positions as well as impacted more than one area of the university community, demonstrated the ability to recognize a need and affect positive change, collaborated with other students, and served as a role model for other students.

The student selected for this award had a vast impact on campus initiatives and her dedication to fostering community among her peers at LSU throughout her four years has had an immeasurable impact.

The Unsung Hero award is given to a member of a student organization who doesn’t hold an executive role but goes above and beyond the call of duty. The student selected for this award is a role model who has made a positive impact on the entire organization.

The student selected for this award is a role model who has made a positive impact for the entire organization. This student is a bright light to many girls who were struggling emotionally and continually made sure that each member in her sorority felt loved, included, and worthy.

Louisiana State University is an interactive community in which students, faculty, and staff together strive to pursue truth, advance learning, and uphold the highest standards of performance in an academic and social environment. From accepting responsibility for our actions to holding ourselves accountable and practicing justice and compassion in human relations, these tenants remind us of what community really about – uplifting each other. We display the Commitment to Community at many events as a reminder of what this community stands for.

Geaux Vote is an organization committed to increasing voter registration and civic engagement on LSU’s campus. Since 2016, Geaux Vote members have registered over 6,500 students to vote. Their collective hard work enabled LSU students to turn out to vote in the 2020 election at nearly 65%, one of the highest rates at a public institution and in the SEC.

The Academic/Educational Award is presented to the organization with the best program focused on a specific discipline or topic that furthers knowledge in that area and encourages dialogue and learning among the attendees. 

This year, Black Minds Matter served as an opportunity for both student attendees and panelists to be in a room and express their concerns without judgement. The program gave Black experts, scholars, and graduate students a platform to share important research and information about Black wellness.

The Advocacy Program Award is presented to the organization with the best program that exemplifies dedication towards the welfare of a cause, global topic, or existing social issue. The program selected for this award will have engaged students through creating awareness, providing solutions, and promoting social change.

Feminists in Action hosted March in Action, a program which raised awareness and support for survivors and gave students a platform to discuss the taboo subject of sexual assault.

The Collaborative Program Award is presented to the organization with the best program implemented through collaboration with another student organization or university department.

Black Minds Matter relied on strong partnerships from student organizations, several LSU departments, and organizations across the state of Louisiana. This event brought together a variety of resources for Black students both at LSU and in the greater community that fostered their personal and professional development.

The Multicultural/Diversity Program Award is presented to the organization with the best program aiming to build positive interactions among different cultures and promotes awareness of cultural and global issues.

The March in Action program hosted by Feminists in Action worked to amplify voices of a diverse group of students calling for critical change in the LSU community.

The Service/Volunteer Program Award is presented to the organization with the best program focused on community service and volunteerism.

The first outstanding service program, Jambalaya Jam, with Alpha Tau Omega, raised more than $18,000 in the Fall 2021 semester to donate to Team Gleason, a non-profit devoted to providing financial assistance and resources to those battling ALS, commonly known as “Lou Gerig’s Disease.” This organization’s program fostered support and served as a model from the LSU community. 

The second outstanding service program, Raise for Relief, with Student Philanthropy Council, was held in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Ida in August 2021 and raised $3,500 in one day for LSU students who lost their family homes and their belongings. This campaign gathered resources for students in need and promoted the value of philanthropy and service to the greater LSU community.

The Social Program award is presented to the organization with the best program focused on enhancing student involvement through broad based campus programs, allowing students to meet new people while having fun in an alcohol and drug free environment.

This year’s Outstanding Social Program, Geauxchella, helped students to engage and make connections while singing and dancing to the music acts with other students.

Student Activities Board!

The Undergraduate Student Leader of the Year Award is presented to an undergraduate student who has made a significant contribution to the quality of life at LSU. The students selected for this award demonstrate their commitment to LSU by making a significant improvement in numerous areas of our campus community. 

Miles McLendon has shown his ability to stay committed to multiple initiatives at a time, prizing radical empathy toward students and prioritizing progress for the LSU community.

Ella Otken is an exemplary role model to other students and continually searches for additional ways that she can serve LSU and the greater Baton Rouge community.

Advisor of the Year is typically nominated by the student organization or organizations they serve. This year is no difference. The nominator said the following: This advisor promotes student leadership, allowing students to navigate logistics and prepare things themselves to push their organization toward success. The nominator spoke of the advisor’s commitment to going above and beyond for his students, and his ability to leave an immediate impact on the students he works with. The organization he advises would not be the organization it is today without the guidance and encouragement he provides.

The Graduate Student Leader of the Year Award is presented to a graduate student who has made a significant contribution to the quality of life at LSU. To be nominated for this award by peers is to be recognized for contributions to our LSU community while engaging in academically rigorous programs and research.

Fatimat Badmus is described as a leader, role-model, and advocate for positive change by bringing a sense of community and family to students who do not have community in Baton Rouge.

Miya Cicely Tate is described as the type of leader that strives to elevate the voices of the underprivileged and underrepresented groups in both the social work program and the wider LSU community.

The New Student Organization of the Year Award is presented to a registered student organization that was created between January 2019 and December of 2020.  

The organization selected for this award has demonstrated their commitment to the mission of the organization as well as academics, leadership development, student involvement, diversity, service and collaboration. 

The organization selected for this award has demonstrated their commitment to the mission of the organization as well as academics, leadership development, student involvement, diversity, service and collaboration.  The African Graduate Student Association (AGSA) members are graduate students from more than fifteen African countries who established this organization in 2020 to create a safe and open space for cross-cultural interactions between students of different backgrounds. Members of the group work to prevent social isolation among new students and to help them adjust to both the LSU community and living in Baton Rouge.

Student Organization of the Year is presented to the student organization that has demonstrated continuous commitment to the mission of the organization as well as academic excellence, leadership development, student involvement, diversity, service, and collaboration. 

Additionally, this organization is one that has become such an integral part of LSU that our LSU experience would not be complete without its contributions. Black Student Union works to promote awareness and to create active change on campus through supporting Black students in a variety of ways, including large social events, professional networking opportunities, and educational initiatives.
