Research Interests

My research interests focus on cognitive and affective variables in substance use initiation, maintenance, cessation, and relapse. I am primarily interested in self-administration of tobacco/nicotine in a variety of populations. More specifically, my interests include:

1. Female endocrinology and self-administration of nicotine. My research includes studies with both pre- and postmenopausal women who smoke.
2. Outcome expectancies for tobacco use, including beliefs about appetite and weight control and subclinical eating disorder pathology.
3. Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use in adolescents and young adults: predictors of initiation and motivational factors in ongoing use.
4. The influence of nicotine on the efficacy of opioid withdrawal medications (agonists and partial agonists). Cessation interventions tailored for individuals with opiate use disorder who smoke.
5. Brief motivational enhancement interventions for alcohol and smoking.

Dr. Copeland is currently not taking students.
