Women in Sports Journalism:
Issues and Stereotypes

Reilly Center to host Sports Communication Summit on November 2.

The dynamic relationship between media and sports will be the focus of a conference of pro athletes, sports reporters and team executives at LSU’s Manship School of Mass Communication on Wednesday, November 2 for a Sports Communication Summit.

NCAA President Mark Emmert and Fox Sports announcer Tim Brando will deliver keynote addresses.

The Sports Communication Summit, hosted by the Reilly Center for Media & Public Affairs, will be held in the LSU Journalism Building Holliday Forum from 8 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend this free event.

Panel topics include “Tackling Social Media,” “Women in Sports Journalism: Issues & Stereotypes,” and “Curve Balls for Front Office Managers.” Panelists include former pro athletes Ben McDonald and Ryan Theriot, sports journalists Katherine Terrell and Kelsey Wingert, league commissioner Cheri Kempf and former team executive Craig Kelley.

“Sports journalists now face an array of issues that go far beyond play-by-play and the next game,” Manship School Dean Jerry Ceppos said. “More and more, sports reporters are writing about drug abuse, sexual harassment and domestic violence. Front office communicators face political protests by athletes as well as business pressures.”

“Our Sports Communication Summit is a day when we will examine a lot of the issues reshaping sports communication,” Ceppos said. The Jim Engster Show will broadcast live from the Holliday Forum in the Journalism Building, starting at 4 p.m. with an in-depth interview with Emmert on a range of issues in college sports.

The Sports Communication Summit is co- sponsored by the Reilly Center, the Tiger Athletic Foundation, 104.5 ESPN Radio Baton Rouge, and LSU’s Olinde Career Center.

The Reilly Center’s mission is to generate thoughtful programs, dialogue and research about mass communication and its many faceted relationships with social, economic and political issues.
