| At LSU Vet Med, we pride ourselves in our efforts to open pathways for students from historically underrepresented groups through both intentional recruitment and increased retention initiatives. The Insights into LSU Vet Med Program provides students with an immersive learning opportunity showcasing LSU’s accessible and equitable academic experience. This two-week-long summer program features undergraduate students from universities across Louisiana and beyond. The program is designed to give students a view into the veterinary school experience through demonstrations and interactive activities. |

Dr. Andrew Muir gave the students a lecture on large animal medicine, and they were then taken to the large animal department where they had the opportunity to meet Milk Dud, our beloved fistulated cow. There, they were informed about the importance of Milk Dud and how she is used to help heal other cows. They also had the exciting opportunity to help Dr. Muir extract some of Milk Dud's ruminal contents.
Dr. Adriano Vatta delivered a lecture on parasitology to the students, covering various topics related to worms and parasites. The students were then provided with the opportunity to examine different specimens under microscopes, including hookworms, heartworms, and various types of worm eggs.
Dr. Lorrie Gaschen presented an introductory lecture on radiology fundamentals to the students. Following the lecture, the students were taken to our clinical skills lab where they had the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice by performing ultrasounds on simulated patients. The lab provided a safe and controlled environment for the students to hone their skills under expert supervision, enabling them to gain confidence in this important medical procedure.
Under the guidance of Dr. Henry Green, students were able to gain practical experience in the field of cardiology. They attended a lecture on the fundamentals and significance of cardiology, followed by a visit to the cardiology department of our veterinary teaching hospital for an in-depth insight into the discipline. There, they had the chance to conduct echocardiograms, interpret EKGs, and engage in other related activities.
The students had an exciting day at the Audubon zoo. They were given a behind-the-scenes tour of various zoo facilities such as the hospital, quarantine area, and indoor housing units. To contribute to the zoo's upkeep, they participated in a clean-up and restoration of the quarantine area. Additionally, the students got a chance to speak with Dr. Robert MacLean, the senior veterinarian at Audubon, about his daily life as a zoo veterinarian and the necessary qualifications for pursuing such a profession.
Students were dressed professionally for their mock interviews. As part of our effort to prepare them, we arranged for multiple interviewers to ask them a series of questions similar to those asked in traditional vet school interviews. The goal was to help students become familiar with the types of questions they might encounter, reduce any anxiety they might feel, and receive feedback on areas where they could improve.
