Through his work in the Electrical Engineering Department, LSU Engineering Freshman Michael Curry has not only honed technical skills but also cultivated invaluable skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication. His favorite memory from his on-campus employment experience, completing the Bluetooth controlled Roomba project, highlights not just a technical achievement but a testament to his ability to overcome challenges.

“The day when I was finally able to combine all of the coding, wiring, and interfacing that I had been working on [...] into an app on a phone that controlled something as simple as a Roomba, was truly special to me," says Curry.

Curry was awarded the Purple Award for Student Employee of the Year. The Purple Award recognizes students who excel in the areas of innovation and creativity, and have provided unique contributions to their departments. Students nominated for the purple award demonstrate originality, display critical thinking, and contribute to their department in a way that has made significant changes or impacts.

Looking towards the future, Michael is set to start on a path that holds immense promise. Whether pursuing further education or stepping into the professional world upon graduation, his experiences as a student employee have laid a solid foundation for success. From developing technical expertise to refining time management and work ethic, the lessons learned in his campus job will serve him well in his future endeavors.

For aspiring student employees, Michael offers advice rooted in his own journey. He encourages students to explore opportunities that align with their interests and aspirations, emphasizing the importance of finding fulfillment in one's work. His own experience of discovering a passion for research within his department exemplifies the transformative power of finding the right fit.

As Michael looks ahead to the next chapter of his academic and professional journey, his commitment to giving back to his campus community remains in place. Whether through alumni associations or mentorship programs, he recognizes the importance of paying it forward and supporting the next generation of students.

Student employees continue to shape and enrich our university communities. Their impact, though often unseen, is immeasurable, serving as a testament to the transformative power of student employment.
