Research Safety
LSU is committed to maintaining a culture of safety through the university, in all colleges and departments, and across all disciplines. In 2017, the Association of Public & Land Grant Universities (APLU) issued a report on the need for creating and sustaining such a culture in higher education. The LSU Research Safety Committee has reviewed the report's recommendations and issued a response that highlights LSU's strengths as well as areas for improvement.

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) group at LSU provides safety and environmental services to the LSU campus, including the AgCenter, Law Center and System Offices. Our role and responsibilities are defined in the Policy Statement (PS) 19, University Safety Policy.

Proper disposal of hazardous materials is required whenever a responsible individual leaves Louisiana State University or transfers to a different laboratory. (“Responsible individual” can include, but is not limited to: faculty, staff, post-doctoral, and graduate students.) Plan the disposal of hazardous materials carefully. Hazardous materials such as chemicals, microorganisms, tissues, and sources of radiation can injure faculty, students, staff, contractors and visitors if handled inappropriately.

The Radiation Safety Office (RSO), a research compliance unit under the direction of the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC), provides research guidance and regulatory-mandated support of academic activities involving the use of sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation at LSU.
