Ranna Okeil

Ranna Okeil is driven by a good challenge. In the E. J. Ourso College of Business, she has gained knowledge and developed skills to take on complex issues. The double major (BS Economics and BS Mathematics) also has extensive research experience and is part of the Ogden Honors College.

Ranna's economics degree provides a conceptual background for topics like inflation and interest rates. In contrast, her mathematics major helps her apply analytic tools to those concepts. While the degrees are vastly different, they work hand-in-hand.

"What I love most about being an econ major is how applicable everything I learn in class is to my daily life. You see all these aspects on the news daily, whether it's interest rates, inflation, or how inflation affects the labor market. You can also see it in government policies. Classroom learning helps me make decisions when trying to be a responsible citizen."  

By coupling her coursework with undergraduate research, a pursuit she began during her first year at LSU, Ranna has more opportunities for growth and development.

"The most valuable skill I've learned is my ability to research. Research is used in every facet of life, whether for your career or personal life. One example is learning how to Google things efficiently. The skills I learned from research, such as mathematical skills and learning how to code, I've applied to not only my work in the college but also at my internship and career."

As a member of the President's Future Leaders in Research program, which allows students to participate in faculty-mentored research, Ranna has also benefitted from working with Associate Professor Daniel Keniston, whom she credits with helping her develop essential career skills and contributing to her  success.

Ranna's research experience also opened the door to working as a visiting research assistant for David Atkin, professor of economics at MIT, during the summer of 2022. She worked on two different randomized control trials focusing on Africa and Indonesia.

Given the benefits gained through these experiences and other interactions with faculty, it's no surprise that she encourages first-year students to make connections with faculty.

"It can be daunting to talk to professors with decades of experience and so much knowledge. Don’t be afraid. Go to their office hours and have a regular conversation with them. Professors love to talk to passionate students, and if there's something you're interested in, it's important to have a guide to help you better understand that topic."

Fueled by her passion and experience, Ranna plans to return to her internship site, FTI Consulting in McLean, Virginia, to launch a career as an economic consultant. In the role, she will look at data to provide solutions for clients with an emphasis on economic impact analysis.

One thing is for sure: Ranna Okeil will continue to rise to the challenge and make a significant impact in her field and beyond.
